Splenectomy is a frequently performed procedure following trauma or hematological disorders and en-block resection in the radical cancer surgery.
211 cases of splenectomy were performed during the period of Jan. 1978, to Dec. 1982 at the Department of surgery of Dong-san Medical Center, Keimyung University and the clinical analysis and review of literatures were carried out about these cases.
The result were as follows;
1) In 211 cases, 145 were male and 66 were female and the most common age distribution was in 4th decade.
2) Surgical indications for splenectomy in 211 cases were as follows; trauma in 67 cases, operative trauma 23 cases, en-blockresection in radical cancer surgery in 73 cases, portal hypertensions in 32 cases, hematological disorders in 10 cases and other conditions in 8 cases.
3) Complications after splenectomy developed in 39 cases; Pleural effusion, atelectasis and pneumonia were the most common complications.
4) Postoperative mortality was 5.2% and the cause of death in most of cases were acute renal failure and multiple organ injuries.
